Gripsholm Castle

It was a perfect Saturday spring weather so we went out with couple of friends as planned. We didn't know really where to go so we ended up with a sightseeing tour at Gripsholm Castle situated in the town of Mariefred. The castle wasn't opened yet for public viewing (which I believe will be officially opened in May and some special opening hours during the lenten season) but, we walked around the castle's garden and fed some birds near the lake Mälaren. Gripsholm Castle is regarded as Sweden's most finest historical monuments and it also houses the oldest portrait collection in the world. That's according to some information I read. Well, if you are a tourist in Sweden and wanted to visit the place then below are the transportation alternatives that you can choose:

By public transport

Railway from Stockholms central to Läggesta. From Läggesta bus to Mariefred/Gripsholm Castle.

During spring, summer and autumn an alternative to the bus is the steam engine train from Läggesta to Gripsholm Castle, telephone +46 159 210 00.

By boat

Regular boat services in summertime from Stadshuskajen (the City Hall Quay) to Mariefred. For times and fares, call Mariefreds Ångfartygs AB telephone +46 8 669 88 50.

By car

From Stockholm, drive E4 south to Södertälje and from there E20 to Strängnäs. Turn off Mariefred and Gripsholm Castle. Free car park for visitors to the castle.
